If you are using XOOPS 2.4.0, you will see a large number of temporary files in the xoops_data/caches/smarty_cache folder created by the Smarty engine.

On simple XOOPS site, the Smarty engine may create about 20 files per hour. That is about 500 files per day, or 15,000 files per month. If let the site run for a year without any clean up, the "smarty_cache" folder will have about 180,000 files!

There seems to be not easy way to turn off Smarty cache. And there is no admin function for you cleanup the cache on XOOPS 2.4.0.

What you have to do is to clean up the cache folder manually every month:

- Go to the Web server

- Go to the xoops_data/caches/smarty_cache folder

- Delete all files in that folder
